President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for decisive global action on climate change, highlighting energy security as a key pillar of the Maldives’ socio-economic development and long-term national resilience.

In remarks celebrating the International Day of Clean Energy, the President emphasised that for Small Island Developing States, securing reliable and sustainable energy supplies is closely linked to national progress and climate adaptation. He said advancing clean energy and strengthening energy security remain critical priorities for the Maldives.

President Dr Muizzu noted that the country has expanded its renewable energy capacity in recent years, particularly through increased use of solar power, while continuing to assess technologies best suited to the Maldives’ environmental and geographical conditions. He said further investments are being made to support the transition to cleaner energy sources.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency and strengthen the legal and regulatory framework governing the energy sector. He said these measures are aligned with the Government’s target of generating 33 per cent of national energy demand through renewable sources by 2028.

Reiterating the Government’s commitment to sustainable development, President Dr Muizzu urged stakeholders to take forward-looking and coordinated action to support the clean energy transition. He said the shift to renewable energy would not only reduce environmental risks but also contribute to broader national development.

In a message shared X, the President stated that integrating clean energy into national planning would support improvements in public services, including education and healthcare, while creating new economic opportunities. He described energy security as a vital driver of human development and resilient public infrastructure.

The International Day of Clean Energy is observed annually on 26 January, marking the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency. The day seeks to promote global efforts towards a just energy transition and recognises international cooperation in advancing renewable energy innovation.
