First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has stressed the importance of electing councillors, women’s development committee members and mayors who will work closely with the Government to deliver development and public welfare, during the inauguration of the People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate for the Malé South Maafannu constituency council seat.
She highlighted the need for cooperation between local councils and the central Government, saying effective governance depends on officials who share clear policies and are committed to serving the public. She cautioned that electing representatives who oppose the Government from the outset would not benefit communities and could hinder progress.
Reflecting on her long-standing connection to South Maafannu, the First Lady referred to improvements made to the area over the years, noting development initiatives undertaken during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s previous roles as Minister of Housing and Urban Development and as Mayor of Malé City. She said residents would recognise the positive changes brought about through coordinated leadership.
The First Lady also pointed to the Government’s ongoing efforts to address socio-economic challenges across the Maldives, emphasising that councils play a crucial role as institutions closest to the people. She said councils that effectively convey public concerns and needs to the Government can help ensure better services and outcomes for communities.
She further highlighted the importance of leadership with a strong sense of national service, recalling the sacrifices made by the PNC’s mayoral candidate Moosa Ali Jaleel during the events of November 3, 1988, and describing such dedication as essential for trustworthy leadership.
The First Lady concluded by appealing to voters, including supporters of both the ruling party and the opposition, to back PNC candidates in the upcoming local council elections.
