Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has appealed to the public to exercise caution on roads in school zones, as the new academic year commenced across the Maldives.
In a message issued to mark the start of the academic year, the Commissioner called on students, parents, teachers and the wider community to work together to ensure that every child’s journey to and from school is safe and positive. He emphasised the importance of heightened awareness in school zones and along routes frequently used by students.
The Commissioner said the Maldives Police Service will continue to work closely with schools to enhance student safety and contribute to building a safe and compassionate society. He noted that cooperation between communities and law enforcement is essential in creating a secure environment for children.
Reflecting on the start of the new academic year, Commissioner Naveen described it as a period of renewed hope, ambition and opportunity. He said education extends beyond academic learning, highlighting the importance of values such as discipline, responsibility, good conduct and mutual respect. According to the Commissioner, these qualities play a key role in fostering a peaceful and harmonious society, alongside formal education.
A total of 219 schools across the Maldives reopened for the new academic year following a month-and-a-half holiday with 80,715 students, from pre-school to Grade 12, enrolled in schools nationwide.
