Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has reported that 82 per cent of the second phase of the Malé North Side Boduthakurufaanu Road Development Project has been completed, with preparations set to begin this week for sub-base construction and asphalt works.

According to MTCC, key components of the project have already been completed, including land reclamation, sheet piling, panel installation, and the installation of water drainage systems, stormwater catchpits, cable junctions, sewerage infrastructure and water pipelines. The Quay wall capping final concrete work is scheduled to be completed by today.

The company added that construction of a settlement tank, along with concrete works for water and cable trenches, is currently underway. Preparatory works for the road sub-base are expected to commence this week, followed by asphalt paving.

Under the project, a 250-metre stretch of road from the local market area to the North Harbour is being developed, with the road widened to six metres. In total, 1,088 metres of roadway will be upgraded, extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour.

The first phase of the project, covering 140 metres, has already been completed. Once fully completed, the project is expected to modernise roads in the market area, enhance pedestrian safety, improve stormwater management to reduce flooding, and ease congestion in the commercial harbour area, enabling smoother transportation of goods within Malé City. MTCC aims to complete the second phase of the road development before Ramadan and open the newly developed section to the public.
