Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has said the National Action Plan on Disability Inclusion represents one of the Government’s most significant initiatives, describing it as a major step towards strengthening the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

The Vice President made the remarks following the inauguration of the National Action Plan on Disability Inclusion on Wednesday.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice President said the Government is closely monitoring challenges faced by persons with disabilities and is taking targeted measures to address them. These include training programmes aimed at improving employability and developing work-related skills.

He said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu places special importance on disability inclusion, noting that ensuring meaningful participation of persons with disabilities is a central part of the Administration’s policy direction.

Over the past two years, 367 persons with disabilities have been employed, he said, adding that the action plan reflects the Government’s long-term commitment to inclusive development.

The Vice President also referred to Islamic teachings on the treatment of persons with disabilities, saying values rooted in compassion and dignity, in line with the Sunnah, should be cultivated within society.

The National Action Plan on Disability Inclusion focuses on improving access to education, training and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, while also promoting their participation in decision-making processes.

The Vice President conveyed the President’s appreciation, along with his own, to stakeholders involved in developing and implementing the action plan. He also thanked the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for its contribution, noting the agency’s continued support in national development efforts.
