The National Water and Sewerage Policy has been launched to guide the provision of safe drinking water and adequate sewerage services to communities across the Maldives.

The policy was inaugurated on Wednesday by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim.

The National Water and Sewerage Policy sets out a framework for the sustainable management of the country’s water resources and the development of water and sanitation services nationwide. It aims to strengthen long-term planning and coordination in addressing water security and sanitation needs.

Under the policy, priority is given to ensuring equitable access to water and sewerage services for all residents, conserving natural freshwater resources, and promoting the use of innovation and modern technology. The framework also emphasises the importance of research, capacity building, human resource development and public awareness in improving water and sanitation outcomes.
