President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that 90 projects in the Islamic sector were launched in 2025, as part of the Government’s efforts to strengthen religious infrastructure and services.

In his Presidential Address 2026, the President said the projects included the construction of 74 mosques, seven Islamic centres, three branches of the National Centre for the Holy Quran, and six Waqf buildings.

He said construction of the Dhidhdhoo Islamic Centre and mosques in 10 islands has been completed and inaugurated, while eight additional mosques are scheduled to be opened before the start of Ramadan. Alongside new construction, mosque renovation works are also underway. The President said MVR 19.4 million was spent on mosque renovations last year, with a further MVR 15 million allocated for renovations this year.

The President also announced that construction of the Grand Mosque in Hulhumalé will begin this year. He said the main prayer hall of the mosques, with a capacity of over 800 worshippers, along with women’s prayer areas, will be air-conditioned. He added that the main halls and women’s prayer areas of four mosques in the Malé area will be air-conditioned before the start of Ramadan.

Highlighting efforts to expand Qur’anic education, the President said last year recorded the highest number of Huffaz graduates, with 30 completing their studies. He added that work has begun to establish a branch of the National Centre for the Holy Quran in every island.

To encourage Quran memorisation, the President said the monthly allowance for Huffaz was increased from MVR 2,000 to MVR 4,000.

He further announced that development of a dedicated Waqf building for the Holy Quran will commence this year to ensure sustainable funding for Quranic activities. The Government has also decided to cover all expenses related to the National Quran Recitation Competition. As part of efforts to enhance incentives, first-place winners in each category will be awarded Presidential Scholarships up to PhD level in any field and in any country.

The President said work will begin this year to increase the number of teachers trained to teach Quran to persons with disabilities as part of initiatives to promote inclusive Quranic education.
