President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated the contribution of women and girls is vital in addressing global challenges, stressing that equal participation is essential to building a scientific landscape that benefits all.

In a message marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the President stated that the Maldives’ progress is closely tied to empowering women in technical and scientific fields. He noted that ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls remains key to advancing innovation and national development.

The President highlighted ongoing efforts to encourage more women and girls to pursue education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). These include expanding access to higher education, strengthening technical and vocational training, offering scholarships, and introducing new programmes in engineering, ICT, marine science, health sciences and emerging technologies.

He said continued investment in education, research capacity and digital skills development is creating new pathways for young women across the country.

President Dr Muizzu also highlighted the importance of removing barriers that limit participation. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to improving access and building an environment where girls with an interest in science are supported to learn, lead and contribute to national growth.

In a separate message shared on his official X account, the President recognised women who have broken traditional barriers in the scientific community. He noted their role in advancing knowledge and driving progress, particularly in the health and technology sectors.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed annually following its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly to promote equal participation of women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
