The national airline, Maldivian, has commenced seaplane operations to Alifu Alifu Thoddoo, expanding domestic air connectivity and improving access to the island.

The launch was marked by a ceremony held in Thoddoo, attended by Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim, Deputy Managing Director of Island Aviation Ali Saleem, senior officials from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, and members of the Thoddoo Island Council.

Speaking at the ceremony, Island Aviation Deputy Managing Director Ali Saleem said the introduction of seaplane services to Thoddoo fulfils a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to improve transport connectivity to islands with growing tourism activity. He noted that travel to such islands has previously posed challenges for both residents and visitors, adding that the new service is expected to ease access and support local economic activity.

Saleem said flights to Thoddoo will be operated on a regular basis, with adjustments to frequency planned if demand increases. He added that the initiative is part of efforts to improve public convenience while contributing to economic growth.

A seaplane platform has been established in Thoddoo, with passenger check-in arrangements made at the Thoddoo Island Council Office. Maldivian will initially operate two flights per week, scheduled on Thursdays and Saturdays.

According to Maldivian, the one-way fare for the seaplane service to Thoddoo is MVR 799. The airline also said it is working to expand seaplane operations to additional resort destinations, with plans to increase services in line with demand.
