The State collected MVR 4.45 billion in January, reflecting a 33.1 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, according to statistics released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
MIRA reported that revenue performance for the month was, however, 4.9 per cent lower than projected. The year-on-year increase was largely driven by higher collections from bank income tax, land sales and land transfer fees, alongside improved performance in the tourism sector.
According to MIRA, tourist arrivals to the Maldives increased by 7.4 per cent in December 2025 compared to December 2024, contributing to stronger revenue from tourism-related sources. The authority also noted that collections linked to the second interim income tax statement for 2025 and the payment deadline for the 2025 tax year supported overall revenue growth.
MIRA said revenue declined compared to the previous month due to lower collections from business profit tax and certain tourism-related taxes, particularly Green Tax and departure tax. The authority said 7.6 per cent of revenue collected during the month related to payments from the previous quarter.
The authority said 25.9 per cent of total revenue collected in the month was generated through recovery of outstanding dues. A total of MVR 531.68 million was collected through enforcement measures, including MVR 305.84 million from the issuance of notices, MVR 51.08 million from dues clearance, MVR 7.92 million from withholding funds from taxpayers’ bank accounts, MVR 95.94 million from follow-up calls to taxpayers, and MVR 70.91 million through instalment agreements.
A breakdown of the figures shows that Goods and Services Tax (GST) accounted for the largest share of revenue collected last month, amounting to MVR 1.79 billion, or 40.4 per cent of total revenue. Income taxes generated MVR 1.54 billion, or 34.7 per cent, while land sales and land transfer fees contributed MVR 271.44 million. Other major sources included Green Tax at MVR 221.80 million, Airport Development Fee at MVR 188.85 million, and departure tax at MVR 180.79 million.
MIRA also stated that total revenue collected last month amounted to USD 180.42 million.
