The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has reported that haze conditions have reduced visibility in the Malé City area to as low as two kilometres today.

In a statement, MET said the intensity of the haze has increased across the country, with the most significant impact observed in the Malé region. Northern and central atolls are also experiencing deteriorating air quality.

The agency stated that hazy conditions are expected to persist nationwide over the next five days, with reduced visibility likely to continue over the coming two to three days.

Current visibility readings indicate that visibility has dropped to two kilometres in Malé, three kilometres in Hanimaadhoo, four kilometres in Kadhdhoo, and seven kilometres in Addu.

Meteorological authorities explained that haze at this time of year is generally linked to smoke and airborne pollutants transported by northeasterly winds from the Indian subcontinent and neighbouring regions.

Air quality levels are currently considered unhealthy. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to take necessary precautions, particularly young children, elderly individuals, and those with respiratory or chronic medical conditions.

Possible short-term health effects of haze exposure include irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, headaches, dizziness, coughing, breathing difficulties, and worsening of existing respiratory or heart conditions.

Authorities are advising residents to minimise outdoor activities where possible and to use face masks when outside in order to reduce exposure to polluted air.
