First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for respectful and responsible campaigning ahead of the upcoming Local Council Elections and Women’s Development Committee elections.

She made the remarks while speaking at a Maahefun organised by the women’s wing of the People’s National Congress (PNC). In her address, she urged candidates and supporters to refrain from personal attacks, insults and defamatory remarks during campaign activities.

Highlighting that the campaign period coincides with the holy month of Ramadan, the First Lady encouraged the public to increase acts of worship and reflection while fulfilling their civic responsibilities. She stressed that maintaining good conduct and mutual respect during political activities is consistent with Islamic values.

She appealed to those engaged in campaigning to avoid hostility and to conduct their activities in a manner that upholds dignity and respect. In addition, she noted that interacting with others with courtesy and refraining from offensive behaviour are important religious principles.

The First Lady also called on PNC candidates to carry out their campaign efforts in line with Islamic principles and ethical standards.

The Local Council Elections and Women’s Development Committee elections are scheduled to take place nationwide in 4 April.
