Republic Square has been temporarily reopened to the public as renovation works near completion under the project being carried out by the Road Development Corporation (RDC).

The square, a popular recreational space for families and a venue for national events, was closed in October as part of a redevelopment initiative to revitalise public parks and open spaces in Malé City.

RDC said around 90 per cent of the renovation works have now been completed, enabling partial public access during Ramadan evenings. However, sections of the site where landscaping and finishing works are still underway remain closed, and the public has been advised to exercise caution.

The redevelopment includes refurbishment of the fountain, construction of new walkways, installation of seating and benches, landscaping and tree planting, and overall beautification of the area. Concrete seating has been replaced with wooden benches, while pathways have been redesigned to improve accessibility and enhance the layout of the park. The site was also cleaned and cleared ahead of the reopening.

RDC said access was facilitated to allow families and visitors to use the public space during Ramadan, despite some remaining works, including flooring installations delayed due to the late arrival of imported materials.

Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib and RDC Managing Director Ibrahim Nazeem visited the site to inspect the progress of the redevelopment works.

The Government is also undertaking several public space development projects in Malé City, including works at Rasfannu and Sultan Park, as part of efforts to improve recreational areas for residents and visitors.
