Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has begun work to provide water and electricity services to vessels docking near the Malé Local Market area.

The move follows the reopening of the North Harbour zone, including the jetty along Boduthakurufaanu Magu, where cargo and passenger vessels have resumed operations after being temporarily relocated to the MMA area and the Hulhumalé Petrol Jetty due to road development works.

Previously, vessels docking along the North Harbour A zone, facing Boduthakurufaanu Magu, did not have access to water and electricity connections. MPL said work is now underway to extend these essential services to the area.

As part of upgrades carried out when services at North Harbour resumed, MPL replaced severely damaged docking cleats. A total of 36 new cleats have been installed, allowing vessels to berth more safely. The company added that relocation of vessels to the North Harbour B zone is scheduled to begin next week.

The North Harbour area was reopened last Thursday for cargo vessels and fishing boats following the completion of phase two of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu road development project. The works included land reclamation on the seaward side, road widening, asphalt paving and reopening the area to the public ahead of Ramadan.

Under phase two of the project, a 250-metre stretch from the Local Market area to North Harbour has been asphalted and upgraded. An additional six metres of reclaimed land was added to widen the roadway.

As part of the wider Boduthakurufaanu Magu development, road works from the official jetty area to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal are scheduled to commence during Ramadan. The project is expected to be completed by the end of May this year.

Upon completion of the full development, the Government has stated that congestion in the commercial harbour area will be reduced, while cargo handling and passenger movement will improve. The upgraded road is also expected to enhance pedestrian safety and mitigate flooding, transforming it into a modern dual carriageway
