Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo have been formally removed from the administrative jurisdiction of Addu City following Decrees issued by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu this week.

The move follows a public referendum held on 25 October 2025 in Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, where residents voted on a proposal to restructure the Addu City Council. The outcome paved the way for Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo to be recognised as separate inhabited islands, no longer administered under Addu City.

The changes were enacted under Section 56-1(a) of the Decentralisation Act (Act No. 7/2010), which empowers the President to determine and designate the jurisdictions of City and Island Councils.

With the decrees now in force, updated administrative charts reflecting the revised boundaries have been codified and published in the Government Gazette.

The restructuring represents a notable shift in local governance arrangements in the Addu region, with separate council administrations to operate for Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo going forward.
