President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the public cannot afford setbacks caused when political interests take precedence over national development, stressing the need for stronger cooperation between the Government and local councils.
He made the remarks during a press briefing at the President’s Office on Monday, in response to a question from a journalist.
President Dr Muizzu emphasised that the successful delivery of his Administration’s pledges depends significantly on the active support of local councils. He noted that while the law grants the executive authority to take action against councils when necessary, such powers should not be exercised unnecessarily.
He said the existence of authority does not, in itself, justify its use, and highlighted that any power held must be exercised responsibly.
The President further noted that development efforts are often hindered when political agendas are prioritised over public welfare. He said that if all parties act professionally and put aside partisan interests, the public would not face avoidable obstacles.
Reaffirming his commitment to decentralisation, President Dr Muizzu said councils are constitutionally part of the executive branch and are therefore required to support Government policies and national initiatives.
He added that as the President is elected by a national majority, all institutions within the executive must work collaboratively to ensure the full delivery of services promised to the public.
