Four sports projects completed across islands over past two weeks: Minister Rafiu

Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has announced the completion of four sports infrastructure projects over the past two weeks.

Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office, the Minister said the projects include a newly developed futsal pitch in Kaafu Kaashidhoo, which has already been opened for public use.

Minister Rafiu also confirmed that new volleyball courts in Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo and Dhaalu Maaen’boodhoo have been completed and are now operational. In addition, an outdoor gym in Thaa Veymandoo has been established as part of a nationwide initiative to improve access to fitness facilities.

The Minister further provided updates on new projects, stating that contracts have been signed for the development of football grounds in Shaviyani Narudhoo, Thaa Veymandoo, Raa Ungoofaaru, Raa Fainu, Raa Rasmaadhoo, and Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo. He added that lighting and fencing upgrades have also been contracted for the football ground in Noonu Maalhendhoo.

Highlighting developments in the sports sector, Rafiu noted that the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Under-20 Championship has commenced in the Maldives, marking the first international football tournament hosted in the country since 2021. He added that national teams are preparing to participate in several upcoming international competitions.

The Minister also said an information session has been conducted under the Government’s insurance scheme for national athletes, aimed at strengthening support for sports professionals.

He emphasised that alongside infrastructure development, the Ministry is continuing to introduce programmes to promote healthier lifestyles and encourage greater public participation in sports and fitness activities nationwide.
