Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that the Maldives is actively diversifying its import sources and expanding trade relations across Asia and Africa to mitigate the impact of global supply chain disruptions.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office on Tuesday, Minister Saeed confirmed that the Government is moving beyond traditional partners to engage with markets in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia, while also establishing new ties with countries that previously had limited trade engagement with the Maldives.

Central to this strategy is also the ongoing implementation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China.

Minister Saeed emphasised that China remains a vital partner, providing a consistent supply of essential goods through close coordination with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

Beyond Asia, the Government is targeting the African continent for sector-wide trade expansion.

To support these growing economic links, the Minister highlighted a parallel focus on improving connectivity, including the development of enhanced sea and air cargo routes and ongoing discussions to introduce major African airlines to the Maldives.
