The Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) is preparing to meet Kulhudhuffushi City's full water demand using renewable energy, with the system expected to be operational from next month.
Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed announced via social media that practical work on transitioning the system to renewable energy began last year and has since been completed. He stated that the system is currently in its testing phase; once cleared, it will operate without diesel, supplying the city's water needs from April onwards.
MWSC said the project represents a meaningful stride towards providing sustainable water services to inhabited islands across the Maldives.
Contracted to Japan's Kanadevia Corporation, the project features a reverse osmosis (RO) plant capable of producing 500 cubic metres of water per day, supported by a 500 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system and a 1,450 kWh battery system.
Japan's Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) provided grant funding covering 27 per cent of the project's cost, with MWSC financing the remainder.
The shift to renewable energy is expected to lessen the country's dependence on fossil fuels and oil imports, while reinforcing the Maldives' climate commitments and advancing progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Government is committed to ensuring that 33 per cent of the country's electricity is through renewable energy sources by 2028.
