The “Project Solar City”, developed under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework, is expected to become operational within two years, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has said.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the Minister confirmed that the project, the first initiative under the SEZ Act, is progressing steadily in the Greater Malé region.

He stated that the project is aimed at strengthening national energy security and supporting the long-term sustainability of the Maldives’ energy sector, which remains heavily reliant on subsidised electricity generation.

Electricity demand in Malé is currently around 120 megawatts and continues to increase. Minister Thoriq noted that large-scale systems such as the Solar City project will play a key role in meeting future demand.

In addition to floating solar panels, the project includes supporting infrastructure such as transformers and battery storage systems. A 4.5-kilometre submarine cable will also be installed to connect the generated power to the Malé grid via Hulhumalé.

The project is being financed through foreign investment, with electricity to be supplied to the State Electric Company (STELCO) under a power purchase agreement that is currently being finalised.

Minister Thoriq expressed confidence that the project will be completed within the projected two-year timeframe, noting that progress has remained steady without major technical challenges.

He added that efforts are also underway to expand solar energy solutions to other islands, particularly in areas where land constraints limit conventional installations.
