Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to advancing the national energy roadmap, while acknowledging that a full transition to renewable energy is not yet feasible.
Speaking on current energy priorities, the Minister stated that efforts are focused on strengthening electricity networks and integrating cleaner energy sources into the system.
He noted that the Maldives spent MVR 10 billion on fuel imports in 2025, equivalent to around 10 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The expenditure remains a key concern due to the significant outflow of foreign currency.
The country’s total installed electricity capacity stands at 638 megawatts, with 310 megawatts allocated to inhabited islands, 298 megawatts to resorts, and 30 megawatts to industrial zones.
Inhabited islands alone consume approximately 7,965 barrels of diesel per day, amounting to more than 2.9 million barrels annually, while resorts require a comparable volume.
To strengthen supply, 157 generators with a combined capacity of 115 megawatts have been distributed across the islands to ensure round-the-clock electricity. Additional engines are also being installed in six islands to meet increasing demand driven by ongoing development.
The Government is also targeting 33 per cent renewable energy generation and is prioritising investments in battery storage and grid modernisation to support this shift.
