Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that local private companies can now participate in the Maldives National Logistics Service, an initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s supply chain.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office on Tuesday, Minister Saeed said the network is designed to support food security by linking the Maldives’ three main international ports: Malé Commercial Harbour, Kulhudhuffushi Port and Addu City Port.

He noted that while private sector participation has been opened, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) will continue to play a central role in managing and operating the network to ensure the steady distribution of essential goods.

Launched in February 2026, the logistics service focuses on improving cargo movement from major ports to regional storage facilities through scheduled deliveries, along with enhanced cold chain capacity.

The Economic Minister also highlighted the growing importance of such systems amid global uncertainties, particularly tensions in the Middle East that have raised concerns over supply disruptions.

He added that the Government is expanding national storage capacity, including the development of both dry and cold storage facilities across different regions. Once completed, the system is expected to improve the distribution of essential goods to islands beyond major urban centres.

Addressing concerns over fuel supply, the Minister said the State Trading Organization (STO) continues to maintain adequate fuel and gas reserves. He also noted that a new fuel shipment arrived in the Maldives over the weekend to support market stability.
