Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has said the Government’s policy to strengthen the decentralised system will enhance the capacity of local councils and improve the quality of governance at the island level.

In a post on social media, the minister said empowering councils and reinforcing decentralisation remain key priorities of the Administration, noting that the policy is aimed at bringing governance closer to communities and improving service delivery.

He highlighted ongoing efforts under the policy, including the renovation of dilapidated council buildings and initiatives to strengthen administrative systems within councils, adding that such measures are intended to improve operational efficiency and responsiveness.

The minister also said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has visited islands across the country to engage directly with councils and residents, discussing concerns and identifying areas for improvement, while reaffirming the Government’s commitment to strengthening local governance structures.
