The Government is prioritising the handover of land plots to recipients at Giraavaru Falhu, with efforts underway to complete land reclamation and begin allocations within approximately three weeks, according to Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib.
The Minister stated that work is progressing to finalise land filling and expedite the allocation process, with a focus on ensuring that all eligible recipients receive their plots as quickly as possible. He noted that this project is part of the Government's efforts to address the Maldives’ housing shortage.
These remarks were made during a visit by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to inspect the ongoing reclamation works at Giraavaru Falhu.
The Government is also working to expand the reclaimed area to accommodate all recipients, as the initially available land was insufficient. In addition, revisions have been made to the existing land use plan, which authorities determined was not adequately designed to support a liveable urban environment.
As part of these revisions, land previously allocated for other purposes has been reassigned to increase the number of residential plots. While this has enabled the allocation of additional plots, further adjustments are still required to ensure the area meets urban development standards.
Alongside land allocation, the Government plans to accelerate the development of essential infrastructure, including water, sewerage, electricity, and road networks.
Once reclamation is completed, surveying and registration processes will begin, followed by the phased handover of plots. Authorities intend to proceed with plot allocation in tandem with registration.
The reclamation project is progressing steadily, with completion targeted by the end of April. Surveying is expected to follow immediately, with land handovers scheduled to commence in June.
The Giraavaru Falhu reclamation project was launched on 30 January this year and is being carried out using two dredgers, contributing to the rapid pace of progress.
