The Maldives Police Service has revealed that more than MVR 10 million has been recovered from scam-related cases since the establishment of its Anti-Scam Centre one year ago.

Statistics released by the Anti-Scam Centre show that a total of 2,259 cases have been reported since its inception.

In the past year alone, scams resulted in losses amounting to MVR 27,564,410. Of this, MVR 10,190,879 has been successfully recovered.

Police stated that 785 cases have been resolved so far. In addition, 3,852 bank accounts linked to scam activities have been frozen, while 36 individuals have been arrested. Authorities also confirmed that 235 locally registered phone numbers and 452 devices used in scam operations have been blocked.

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant by verifying the authenticity of individuals before making financial transactions, avoiding the sharing of personal information, and enabling two-factor authentication on applications.

They further highlighted the importance of reporting scam cases promptly, noting that early reporting increases the chances of recovering lost funds.

Scam cases can be reported through the National Emergency Call Centre at 911 or 125 (extension 2020), or via email at [email protected].
