Flydubai is set to begin operating “cargo-in-cabin” flights to the Maldives from this Thursday, in a move aimed at supporting supply chains amid ongoing regional disruptions.
The development was confirmed by the airline’s Maldives agent, ACE Aviation Services Maldives. Its Managing Director, Mohamed Firaq, said the necessary approvals for the operations have already been granted by the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority.
Firaq described the introduction of the flights as a timely and significant step, particularly as aviation services across parts of the region continue to face disruption.
The cargo flights will operate between Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai and Velana International Airport, with services scheduled to run until the 29th of this month.
Speaking on the initiative, Firaq credited Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, noting that the concept of “cargo-in-cabin” operations was first raised by the Minister approximately three weeks ago. He said the proposal emerged as part of efforts to address operational challenges in transporting essential goods quickly during a period of disruption.
Firaq added that the initiative helped pave the way for practical solutions to maintain connectivity and support supply chains, with engagement from key industry stakeholders, including shippers.
This marks the first time Flydubai will operate “cargo-in-cabin” flights to Velana International Airport, allowing goods to be transported within the aircraft cabin rather than conventional cargo holds.
The initiative comes as international air freight services remain affected by tensions in the Middle East. A significant share of goods required for the Maldives’ tourism sector is typically transported by air from the United Arab Emirates, making such operations particularly important at this time.
