Former Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has said there are concerns that Fayyaz Ismail could lose his membership in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) following recent political developments.
Jabir made the remarks while speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, commenting on the decision by former President Mohamed Nasheed to back Fayyaz in the party’s presidential primary, while also deciding to contest for the position of party chairperson.
Responding to a question about challenges faced by those seeking leadership roles within the MDP, Jabir said the party is no longer functioning in the manner of a political party. Instead, he alleged it is being run more like a company.
“The party was run as a political party before. Now it has changed into something like a family entity. It is becoming a one-man show,” Jabir said.
He further claimed that there is no longer space within the party for differing political views, adding that key positions within the MDP appear to be structured in a way that favours specific individuals.
Jabir also pointed to Nasheed’s earlier departure from the MDP, stating that it was due to a lack of opportunity and fairness within the party at the time. Although Nasheed later formed a separate political movement, he has since rejoined the MDP.
“Even now, some individuals are trying to regain influence by involving the public, but it will not work. With the path taken today, it appears Fayyaz could lose his membership. Didn’t the same thing happen to Nasheed?” Jabir said.
Nasheed recently decided to support Fayyaz for the MDP’s presidential primary scheduled for 2028. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is also expected to contest in the primary.
If Fayyaz formally enters the race, he would become the sixth candidate to compete in the MDP’s presidential primary.
The most recent primary, held in 2023, saw Solih and Nasheed contest against each other, with Solih securing the nomination.
