Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said that the construction of the Thilamale’ Bridge linking Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi has reached 72 per cent completion.
Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office, Minster Dr Muththalib said work is currently progressing on the segment between Malé and Vilimalé, with key activities focused on casting bridge segments and connecting pillars.
He said the Government aims to complete the project as soon as possible, although it will not be finished within the initially planned timeline. Discussions are underway to extend the project deadline to allow the contractor to proceed without additional penalties.
Minister Dr Muththalib added that the Government has no intention of terminating the contract and seeking a new contractor, noting that such a move would cause further delays and financial losses to the state.
The project, funded under a Line of Credit from India’s Exim Bank, is now estimated to be completed and opened in 2027, with the Government working to accelerate progress.
