Chief Government Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, has rejected allegations by Malé City Mayor Adam Azim that the Government was involved in an attack on him.

The incident occurred during a protest held in Malé City on Friday night, part of a series of demonstrations organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). During the protest, two individuals reportedly entered the gathering and attempted to assault the mayor.

Speaking to the media after the protest, Azim alleged that the attack had been orchestrated by the Government.

“I was struck in the chest by a group that came from within the protest. People nearby intervened to protect me. I believe this was carried out by the Government,” he said.

Responding to the allegation, the Chief Spokesperson told MMTV that such actions are not something the Government would condone, particularly against individuals serving the public. He added that police protection would be provided to the mayor if requested.

The Spokesperson also noted that no formal complaint regarding the incident has been filed with the authorities by the MDP, the Malé City Council, or the mayor. He emphasised that incidents of this nature should be reported to law enforcement, stating that failure to do so is not a responsible course of action.

He further stated that the claims appear to be based on unverified information, adding that making allegations without evidence is inappropriate, particularly for those holding public office.

The Maldives Police Service is currently investigating the incident.
