President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has condemned an attempted attack on Malé City Mayor Adam Azim.

In a statement issued by Chief Government Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, it was stated that a video showing an individual attempting to attack the Mayor during a protest held in Malé by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been brought to the President’s attention. The President condemned the incident in the strongest terms.

The President stated that the Mayor of Malé is elected directly by the public, and stressed that any attempt to attack or obstruct the work of the Mayor or any other political leader, whether during official duties or personal activities, is unacceptable. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all citizens.

Responding to remarks made by Mayor Azim, the Spokesperson said claims that the attack was carried out by the Government were surprising and lacked any clear basis or evidence. He stated that the incident had no connection to the Government and assured that such actions would not be carried out by the Government.

Concern was also raised that no official report of the incident had been filed with the police by either MDP or the Malé City Council, noting that failure to report such matters hinders law enforcement responsibilities.

He added that the Maldives Police Service has begun investigating the incident independently after the video surfaced on social media.

In addition, the Spokesperson noted that security arrangements can be provided to the Mayor upon request. He added that police regularly conduct threat assessments for senior state officials, and appropriate security measures are implemented if any risks are identified.
