Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib has stated that journalism should not become a business driven by defamation, stressing the need to uphold responsibility within the media sector.

His remarks come as police probe investigation into a documentary released by a media in March, which has drawn public and political attention. The minister said journalism should not be used as a means to generate income by damaging reputations, disrupting families or undermining social stability. He added that such practices should not be facilitated or allowed to continue.

Separately, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, speaking at a meeting with residents in Maafannu, said the current Administration provides space for journalists to operate, noting that press freedom is upheld within the country. He assured that the Government would not obstruct journalists from expressing their views.

However, the President emphasised that freedom of expression must be exercised within the framework of the Constitution and the principles of Islam, and should not be used in ways that harm individuals or violate established boundaries.

The issue has prompted criticism from various quarters regarding the actions of the newspaper.
