Dr Ali Azwar appointed STELCO Managing Director

Dr Ali Azwar has been appointed Managing Director of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), effective 28 April.

The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) confirmed the appointment, stating that Dr Azwar officially assumed the role from that date.

Prior to his appointment, Dr Azwar had been overseeing STELCO’s operations as Deputy Managing Director while the Managing Director’s post remained vacant.

Dr Azwar has served in the energy sector for more than two decades, with extensive experience in strategic leadership, operations, finance, business development and policy formulation. He first joined STELCO in 1997 as a trainee and later held several senior technical and administrative roles, including Chief Operating Officer.

He has also served on STELCO’s board as an executive director appointed by the President and as a non-executive director at Fuel Supply Maldives.

Dr Azwar holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington, with research focused on renewable energy in small island states. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the National University of Singapore and a Bachelor’s degree with honours in Business Studies from the University of Sheffield.
