President Dr Mohamed Muizzu underscored ambitious development plans for Mahibadhoo during a visit to the island on December 15.

The discussions, held at the Secretariat of the South Ariatholhu Atoll Council, involved members of the ADh Mahibadhoo Island Council and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC).

Key topics raised by local representatives included land reclamation, the establishment of an Islamic Centre, improved shore protection measures, and the enhancement of sports facilities. President Dr Muizzu highlighted the Government’s vision to transform Mahibadhoo into an urban centre, focusing on housing schemes and other infrastructure projects to drive regional growth.

Highlighting specific initiatives, President Dr Muizzu confirmed plans to prioritise the construction of 100 housing units on existing land in Mahibadhoo, with work starting next year. Additionally, he pledged to fulfil all requirements outlined in the land use plan and pursue reclamation of Maafaru lagoon to further enhance the island’s development.

Accompanied by cabinet ministers and senior Government officials, the President provided updates on ongoing projects and discussed collaborative efforts needed between the Government and local councils. The visit also included consultations with residents and local leaders to gather insights on community aspirations and the challenges faced by the islands.

Mahibadhoo, identified as one of seven urban centres under the national development framework, is poised to become a key hub for housing and economic activity in the region. The initiative aligns with broader goals for sustainable development and improved quality of life across the Maldives.
