Zakat al-Mal contributions rise by over 30% in Q1 of 2026

Contributions of Zakat al-Mal in the Maldives increased by more than 30 per cent in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period last year.
As per the latest quarterly report released by the Maldives Zakat House, a total of MVR 45.33 million was collected in zakat during the first three months of the year. This reflects a 30.1 per cent increase from MVR 34.85 million recorded in the first quarter of 2025.
The report indicates a steady upward trend in zakat contributions over recent years. Collections rose from MVR 23.56 million in the first quarter of 2024 to MVR 34.85 million in 2025, before reaching this year’s higher figure. Monthly data shows consistent growth throughout the quarter, with the highest contributions recorded in March.
The report also outlines how zakat funds were utilised, with a total of MVR 13.38 million disbursed for social and religious purposes. This included assistance for medical treatment, essential needs, Ramadan support, Qur’an memorisation programmes, educational aid, and broader social development initiatives.
The largest share of disbursements, approximately MVR 6.69 million, was allocated to individuals registered as poor and needy. A further MVR 5.5 million was spent under Fi Sabilillah (for causes in the path of God), alongside MVR 815,000 for zakat administrators and MVR 363,000 to assist stranded travellers.
In addition, the report noted that MVR 41.08 million has been invested to sustainably grow zakat funds. These investments primarily support development projects under waqf institutions, including Darussalam and Darul Arqam.
