The Maldives has officially implemented a ban on the use, sale, and free distribution of vapes, marking a significant step towards promoting public health and societal well-being.

The new regulations, enforced under amendments to the Tobacco Control Act, aim to protect younger generations and address the rising prevalence of vaping among the nation’s youth.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasised the ideological and moral importance of this ban during a public meeting in Mahibadhoo, South Ari Atoll. He stated that the initiative responds to public demand for measures to combat harmful practices prevalent among Maldivian youth. The President highlighted that addressing health issues is crucial for national development, particularly concerning the well-being of young people.

Public health experts have also raised alarms about the harmful effects of vaping, including potential brain damage and behavioural issues. In response to these concerns, the Government has introduced strict measures to curb vape-related activities, with violators facing substantial fines.

The decision to implement the ban is also seen as part of broader Government efforts to align national development with the preservation of Islamic traditions. President Dr Muizzu stressed that addressing health issues, particularly those affecting the youth, is essential for ensuring the nation’s progress and prosperity.

By prioritising public health, the Government aims to safeguard future generations and promote a healthier lifestyle, demonstrating its commitment to societal well-being and the nation’s cultural heritage.
