Adh. Hangnaameedhoo Island Council has emphasised the need for coastal protection measures and other infrastructure needs during a meeting with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, held this morning at the South Ari Atoll Council Office.
The discussions, attended by members of the Island Council and the Women's Development Committee (WDC), centred on addressing the island's developmental needs.
The Council highlighted the immediate threat posed by erosion to the island's shoreline and called for government support to implement effective coastal protection initiatives. This issue was prioritised as a critical concern for the island's long-term sustainability.
In addition to the coastal erosion concerns, the Council outlined other infrastructure needs, including developing the sports sector, upgrading school facilities and introducing a modern waste management system. They also proposed improvements to the boatyard area and stressed the importance of preserving Hangnaameedhoo's cultural heritage for future generations.
Meanwhile, the Women's Development Committee drew attention to community-specific issues, including the lack of access to a nearby picnic island and the incomplete construction of a facility for preparing the deceased.
The President affirmed the government's commitment to addressing the concerns raised and assured the Council and the WDC that their recommendations would guide upcoming actions. He pledged to prioritise the development projects discussed.
Cabinet Ministers accompanying the President provided updates on ongoing initiatives for Hangnaameedhoo as well.
