Fuvahmulah Central MP Ali Fawad has been appointed as the head of the parliamentary Budget Committee tasked with reviewing the state budget, while Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem will serve as the committee's deputy chair.

The Committee aims to complete the budget review process by May 20 and will allow submissions from the Audit Office and the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) for insights on the budget. Additionally, the Committee will request detailed budget plans from autonomous bodies and individual offices to ensure thorough examination.

Last week, the Parliament proposed a state budget of MVR 57 billion for the 2020-21 fiscal year, projecting MVR 39.8 billion in revenue and allocating MVR 36 billion for recurring expenses, which comprise 64% of the total budget. The remaining MVR 13.4 billion is earmarked for capital expenditure. Notably, this budget presentation was one of the shortest in recent times.
