The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to pursuing a principled, independent and responsible foreign policy centred on a “Maldives First” approach.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry said the country’s foreign policy remains firmly grounded in safeguarding national sovereignty, advancing national interests, promoting and protecting human rights, upholding national and international law, and maintaining constructive engagement with bilateral and multilateral partners.
The Ministry emphasised that, as a sovereign and independent State, the Maldives conducts its foreign policy through established institutional processes guided by national interest and mutual respect.
The statement noted that the Maldives places high importance on maintaining cordial relations with all countries, particularly its longstanding development partners. The Government said it remains committed to strengthening cooperation with like-minded countries and organisations on issues of mutual interest, including regional peace, maritime security, sustainable development and international stability.
The Ministry also stressed that public comments on foreign policy, regional security and international partnerships, especially by individuals who have held senior public office, can carry significant implications for the country’s external relations.
It said such statements should contribute to informed dialogue, national unity and public confidence in state institutions, and highlighted the importance of exercising care and sound judgement when speaking on matters affecting national interests.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral and multilateral ties and advancing a foreign policy that reflects the sovereignty, dignity and long-term interests of the Maldivian people.
