President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a series of measures to improve housing, career progression and family support for members of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), as the force marked its 134th anniversary.
Speaking at the official anniversary ceremony held at Kalhuthuh'kalaa Koshi, President Dr Muizzu said the freedom and sovereignty enjoyed by the Maldives today were secured through the courage and sacrifice of Maldivian soldiers.
He said members of the armed forces continue to protect the country’s independence and sovereign boundaries by placing national duty above personal interest, and stressed that the welfare and advancement of every soldier remain a priority for the Government.
The President said the number of soldiers receiving basic housing through Government housing schemes would be increased, noting that housing is a fundamental right of every Maldivian citizen.
He also announced plans to amend regulations that currently limit how long soldiers can remain in a single rank. The proposed changes will allow dedicated personnel to continue serving and progress in their careers.
In addition, President Dr Muizzu said efforts would be made to ensure soldiers are given the opportunity to serve in area commands located close to where their families reside.
During the ceremony, the President presented a range of honours, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Presidential Medal and the Long Service Medal. Awards were also presented to recipients of the health and fitness ribbon, the fittest male and female soldiers of 2025, and the fittest unit.
President Dr Muizzu also inaugurated the School of Engineering and Logistics under the MNDF Service Corps. Located in Kihaadhoo, the institution has been established to strengthen the technical and academic capabilities of defence personnel.
The President was accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and was received by Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed, Chief of Defence Force Ibrahim Hilmy and Vice Chief of Defence Force Ahmed Giyas. The ceremony included a Guard of Honour and a special dua.
The Maldives’ military, now known as the MNDF, was officially established on 21 April 1892.
