Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has revealed that 242 establishments have been inspected and 102 businesses closed as part of the Government’s ongoing operation targeting businesses allegedly being operated illegally by expatriates.
Speaking at the press briefing held today, the minister said the operation has received 409 complaints related to expatriates operating businesses unlawfully since the initiative began late last year. The operation is being carried out jointly by several State institutions, including the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, law enforcement authorities and other relevant agencies.
According to the minister, the inspections conducted so far resulted in the closure of 102 establishments. However, he clarified that not all premises closed during the operation were confirmed illegal businesses, noting that some establishments were temporarily shut down to verify compliance issues and operational procedures.
Minister Saeed stated that 57 establishments were identified as operating illegally and ordered to close, including a number of salons and spas. He added that 61 establishments initially closed during inspections had later been permitted to resume operations after making necessary improvements and meeting regulatory requirements.
The minister further noted that authorities investigate complaints regardless of whether a business is officially registered under a Maldivian individual, adding that efforts are also focused on determining whether expatriates are operating businesses in violation of regulations. He said ongoing discussions with business stakeholders include proposals to review financial activity linked to businesses in order to identify individuals effectively controlling operations.
