Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has stated that freedom of the press must be exercised responsibly and in a manner that respects legal and ethical standards, particularly in matters before the courts.

The minister made the remarks in response to recent controversy surrounding a journalist’s conduct during a press conference held at the President’s Office following a Criminal Court order related to a documentary.

Minister Shiyam said attempts to portray the current Administration as being opposed to media freedom were misleading, noting that the Government continues to maintain direct engagement with journalists through regular press briefings and open media access. He stated that responsible journalism remains an important part of democratic governance and public communication.

The minister further emphasised that court orders and judicial processes should be respected by all parties, including members of the media, adding that press freedom should not be used in ways that conflict with professional ethics or established legal procedures. He also noted the importance of maintaining responsible standards in public discourse and reporting.

Minister Shiyam added that the actions of a small number of individuals should not overshadow the work of journalists who continue to operate according to professional principles and ethical standards. He reaffirmed that the Administration remains supportive of responsible journalism carried out within the framework of the law.
