The Maldives has joined nine other countries in strongly condemning renewed Israeli attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian-led humanitarian mission bound for Gaza.
In a joint statement issued by the foreign ministers of the Maldives, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Jordan, Libya, Pakistan, Spain and Türkiye, the countries condemned what they described as hostile acts targeting civilian vessels and humanitarian activists. The statement expressed concern over reports of attacks on flotilla vessels in international waters and the detention of activists participating in the mission.
The ministers stated that assaults against humanitarian flotillas and civilian participants constitute violations of international law and international humanitarian law. They further called for the immediate release of all detained activists and urged that their rights and dignity be fully respected.
The joint statement also stressed that repeated attacks on peaceful humanitarian initiatives reflected continued disregard for international law and freedom of navigation. The countries called on the international community to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities, ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian missions, and take concrete measures to ensure accountability.
The Global Sumud Flotilla had earlier faced interception near Crete last month, where dozens of activists were detained before most were released following international criticism. Organisers said the latest flotilla involved more than 460 activists from 45 countries travelling aboard dozens of vessels bound for Gaza.
