Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has introduced advanced laser technology for a range of surgical procedures, marking a new development in surgical services at the hospital.

Malé City Group of Hospitals CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem announced in a social media post that the procedures will be performed by the General Surgery team in the Department of Surgery.

According to Haleem, four types of laser-assisted surgeries are now being performed at the hospital. These include Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) for varicose veins, laser hemorrhoidoplasty for piles, Fistula Tract Laser Closure (FILAC) for anal fistula and Sinus Laser Closure (SILAC) for pilonidal sinus treatment.

The CEO stated that the new technology allows surgeries to be performed with minimal cutting, resulting in less pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays and a lower risk of infection for patients.

Meanwhile, IGMH Senior Consultant in Surgery Abdullah Ubeid said the use of laser technology is expected to expand to other specialties, including plastic surgery. The procedures were introduced after medical teams participated in specialised training workshops at hospitals in India.
