Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has credited President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for the United Kingdom's decision to suspend tariffs on Maldivian tuna, effective from today.

In a post on X, Minister Shiyam said the President's steadfast leadership and policies have helped raise the profile of the Maldives' fisheries sector internationally and contributed to securing recognition for the country's sustainably caught tuna in one of its most important export markets.

He described the tariff suspension as a significant boost for Maldivian fishers, their families, island communities and fish processing companies.

Minister Shiyam said the decision acknowledges years of effort by those who have championed the Maldives' traditional one-by-one fishing method, which is widely recognised as a global benchmark for sustainable fishing.

"Maldivian tuna doesn't just feed the world, it does so responsibly, one fish at a time," he said.

The minister also thanked all stakeholders, including industry partners in both the Maldives and the United Kingdom, for their continued efforts in helping to secure the tariff suspension.

The move is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of Maldivian tuna products in the UK market and provide further support to the country's fisheries industry.
