The Maldives has reaffirmed its commitment to the One China Principle, recognising the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing China.
In a press statement issued on 21 May, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Maldives continues to maintain its long-standing position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China.
The ministry noted that the Maldives’ position remains consistent with the policy maintained since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and is based on United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 and principles of international law.
The statement further reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation with China, while expressing appreciation for China’s continued support towards the Maldives’ socio-economic development.
Additionally, the statement stated that Maldives looks forward to further expanding cooperation with China in areas linked to mutual benefit, peace and regional stability.
