Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, has announced that a digitised national blood donor register will be introduced later this year to improve coordination between blood donors and recipients.

Speaking at a ceremony held to mark World Blood Donor Day, Haleem said a system has already been established through the OneGov portal to maintain a registry of thalassaemia patients. He noted that the digital blood donor register would simplify the process of matching donors with recipients and improve the efficiency of blood donation services.

Haleem also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen thalassaemia and blood-related healthcare services in the Maldives. He said a DNA laboratory was opened at the Thalassaemia Centre in February, while blood transfusion services have been expanded to include Fridays.

He further noted that endocrinology services were introduced in July 2025, followed by the launch of haematology services, antigen typing and bone marrow testing in August 2025, describing them as some of the most significant improvements made to the centre since it was established 35 years ago.

Emphasising the importance of blood donation, Haleem described it as an act of compassion and social responsibility, particularly in a Muslim-majority society. He also expressed gratitude to individual donors, private organisations and resorts for their continued support of blood donation initiatives.

He added that the Government, under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, is prioritising efforts to improve care and ensure a reliable blood supply for thalassaemia patients, who depend on regular blood transfusions.
