Maldives welcomes US-Iran agreement, hails diplomatic efforts

The Government of the Maldives has welcomed the agreement reached on the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran aimed at addressing outstanding issues between the two countries, including measures to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the Government described the agreement as an important step towards reducing tensions and promoting peace, security and stability in the region and beyond.

The Maldives expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by both countries in pursuing dialogue and diplomacy to resolve differences and address matters of mutual concern.

The Government also commended the mediation and diplomatic efforts undertaken by Pakistan, Qatar, other Gulf states, and regional and international partners for facilitating dialogue, encouraging de-escalation, and supporting peaceful engagement between the parties.

Reaffirming its support for dialogue, diplomacy and international law, the Maldives expressed hope that the agreement would contribute to stronger cooperation, sustainable economic growth and lasting peace and stability in the region.
