The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has urged the public not to use products promoted with unverified claims for weight loss or the treatment of medical conditions.

MFDA said it has observed products being marketed in the Maldives with claims that they can treat illnesses or alter the body's condition, while encouraging consumers to use them through information shared across various platforms. The authority noted that many products are being promoted as weight-loss solutions or treatments for different diseases without scientific evidence to support such claims.

The authority warned that marketing products using unsubstantiated claims could mislead consumers and pose health risks. It said the risk is particularly high for people receiving treatment for chronic illnesses, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women.

MFDA also noted that sharing promotional content about food products across different platforms constitutes advertising under the authority's Food Advertising Regulation. Under the regulation, it is prohibited to advertise food products by claiming they provide specific health benefits or can treat diseases. The regulation also prohibits advertisements that falsely or misleadingly present a food product as having particular qualities or characteristics.

The authority urged businesses and individuals to ensure food products are advertised in compliance with the Food Advertising Regulation.

Instead of relying on products promoted with unverified claims, MFDA encouraged the public to maintain a healthy lifestyle by following a balanced diet, reducing salt and sugar intake, and exercising regularly.
