Police have fined a motorcyclist and impounded their vehicle for 30 days after a viral video showed the individual using a phone while driving at high speed with a pillion passenger.

In a statement, Maldives Police Service said the rider was fined MVR 2,000 and had their driving licence suspended after they were identified from the widely shared video.

The police reminded the public that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged all drivers to adhere strictly to traffic laws.

Authorities also emphasised their commitment to taking action against traffic violations. They said they actively monitor footage circulated online and will respond accordingly once such incidents come to their attention.
