The Parliament has voted against a no-confidence motion filed by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) against Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen.

The motion was submitted following an incident on April 18 when a woman was found on the roof of a residential building in Malé. Twelve MDP Members of Parliament signed the motion, accusing Minister Ameen of attempting to influence a criminal investigation to protect individuals with family ties to him.

Appearing before the Parliament on Thursday, Minister Ameen denied all allegations, stating that the incident did not occur at his residence and that no agency had concluded any illegal activity had taken place. The Minister added that no pressure was exerted on the police to protect any individuals, emphasising that there was no reason to attempt to influence the investigation. He also noted that any information concerning his residence should be disclosed by the police.

Following the Minister’s response, Parliament held a vote on the motion. Fifty-four members voted in favour of the Minister, while 11 supported the no confidence motion. With the majority vote, the motion was dismissed from the House.
